HSC over. What next?

Pens down, papers, please. Thirteen years of study is over. So what can you expect as you complete your final HSC exam?

While you may have been anticipating this moment for the duration of schooling career, completing the final exam of the HSC can be momentous, and even slightly unnerving occasion.

You may feel confident in your achievement, excited about your future, or concerned about your performance when it comes to how you’ve done. You may also feel unsettled about the future as the doors of school slowly close, so here’s our guide to what happens next.

Give yourself some credit

Completing the HSC exam is the chance to reflect on a job well done, no matter how you think you went in the exams. It’s not easy to apply yourself for two straight years of study, and it’s not easy to narrow down a direction at this early stage of life.

Take a moment to reflect on your achievement, your commitment, and success, in the knowledge you did the best you could, with what you had, in the time allocated to the task.

If things didn’t go to plan

For some the relief of finishing exams will be tempered with the knowledge you may not have achieved what you had hoped.

That’s OK, your HSC exam isn’t the only way to get where you want to go. If you have your heart set on a uni course but feel you may not have achieved your desired ATAR, there are other options like bridging uni and TAFE courses to see you across the line.

HSC results released

As the thrill of exam completion fades, attention inevitably turns to the ATAR – that number which determines your eligibility for a university course. This year ATARs will be released on Tuesday, December 15, and university offers will quickly follow suit.

If your mark slightly misses the spot, be prepared to be flexible in the knowledge the cutoff for uni offers alters from year to year based on demand.

Dealing with offers

If everything’s gone according to plan and you’re happy with your offer, you can kick back over the summer break, but if your plans have altered you have the opportunity to change your preferences up until a prescribed date.

Extra learning

While the welcome break over summer allows some time to relax, for some students entering complex fields like medicine or science, this is the opportunity to get ahead of the game.

It may be wise to further embrace the study habit and brush up on any areas that you feel are lagging such as science or mathematics.

It all begins again

In the interim, the Year 12 students of 2018 will be readying to enter their final year of schooling and the study habits that the HSC exam involves. For them, summer presents the chance to maintain good study habits, getting a jump on the hard yards required in Year 12.
