Heading off to high school

Transitioning from primary to high school is an exciting time in the education journey, signaling the beginning of a new era of focussed learning, independence and the progression towards adulthood.

For some students, it will involve a shift in schools and new social groups, while for others it will herald additional responsibilities and expectations within their current school environment.

As we count the days until the end of 2017, here’s a guide for what to expect in 2018 for students heading off to high school.

The learning load

High school introduces new educational elements like timetables and subject selection. It also signals a steady increase in the learning load. Homework will be regular and consistent, with Education NSW noting:

“In secondary school, there is more evidence, especially in senior years, that homework can enhance student learning. Effective homework in secondary schools may help students to develop and broaden their understanding and skills across new and familiar curriculum areas.

“In Years 7-8, homework may be set across the curriculum. Homework may include regular tasks, assignments that require investigation and preparation for examinations.”

Although the homework level in each school varies, and time spent is likely to increase prior to exams or assessments, around an hour each day in Years 7 and 8 are considered the average.

Subject selection

Throughout high school students are encouraged to develop their own subject interests and specialties in the lead-up to further education and employment. This means as students advance through high school they will be offered a choice about their subjects and extra activities.

Year 7 is an introduction to the subject selection available, with mandatory subjects in the fields of English, mathematics, science, personal development, health and physical education, creative arts, human society and its environment, technology, and languages.

Having experienced these areas, students will then be offered choices within these areas in the future.

Greater organisation

Students will be expected to be increasingly independent in their research and homework habits, with the ability to manage their own time and meet deadlines.

Although much of this is now the student’s responsibility, parents can assist by providing diaries, understanding their timetables, and offering the necessary support materials they need like internet access and a quiet study space.

Students will also be required to move between classrooms and faculties in high school, making the personal organization even more important.

Finding friends

While the focus of high school may be education, much of it also involves students finding their social footing in the world.

Even students transitioning to high school on their current campus and amongst their current friends may find the dynamics of friendships shift within these early teenage years. Meanwhile, those moving into a new school will be required to forge entirely new social networks.

Regardless, the likelihood is peers will become an even greater influence in their life and their decision making.

Homework help

Whether your child is entering a new learning environment or transitioning within their current school, the curriculum of Year 7 sets them up for much of their high school learning experience.

If you feel your child is struggling with the syllabus of high school, seek assistance earlier rather than later by talking with their teachers, and seeking external assistance like tutoring.
