Navigating High School Successfully in 2018

For students entering high school the education journey entails changes to the way they learn and the subjects they are exposed to. The second half of a schooling career involves eight key areas of learning, incorporating foundation subjects and areas of interest, with the focus on honing good study habits and encouraging curious minds for the acquisition of knowledge for life.

Here’s our guide to navigating the academic world of high school from Year 7 to 10 in 2018.

The Foundations

Science, Mathematics and English remain the key foundations of the high school learning voyage in the knowledge other subjects and even careers will rely on them.

Science

Biology, chemistry and physics make up the core of the science curriculum but it now involves further practical elements of experimentation, hypotheses and results analysis. Students will be accumulating knowledge, putting it to the test and noting its application in a wider context of information technology and human endeavour.

Mathematics

Throughout high school mathematics moves into the practical application of numbers and the formulae that underlie the world around us, which solve problems in everyday life.

The focus shifts to logical, flexible, fluent and original thinking, where students are encouraged to apply mathematics to problem solving while recognising the language of numbers and the patterns and relationships within it.

English

Throughout their high school years, students will further their skills in comprehension and grammar, interacting with texts and then critiquing them in an increasingly analytical way through essay writing and discussions.

The principles of grammar, punctuation and spelling should have been laid, with students now using English to interact with the world around them in a practical, methodical manner via written, multimedia and oral means.

The Eight Areas

Along with the three key areas, students are also exposed to technology, human development, languages, the creative arts, and physical education, enabling them to hone their interests for their future careers and secondary learning.

Within these areas they will have the option to choose elective subjects like drama, geography, industrial technology and more, exposing them to the various industries and areas to pique their interest.

Supporting High School Students

In their high school years, students will become responsible for their own study habits including meeting deadlines, submitting assignments, revising for tests and completing required homework.

Parents can assist by establishing quiet study zones and setting homework time, with access to the required materials such as internet, a space free of distractions and the necessary resources and stationery.

While their study will become more independent, it’s important to encourage students to seek help when required and provide them the tools to meet their learning needs.

As not only a time of learning but also social awareness, students will be gaining and testing their confidence in an increasingly challenging domain.
