During Year 1 & 2 students need to be supported while they are encouraged to work more independently. At school they are required to complete more tasks independently and show initiative. This is a huge undertaking for anyone, especially a child.
By this stage students have established familiarity with foundational number knowledge and now need to be guided through more positive experiences to understand Mathematics as a growing body of knowledge and skills.
At Chalkwall students will develop confidence and mental fluency with whole number, counting and place value. This involves working with numerals, words, pictures and hands-on materials. The program is thoughtfully planned to challenge and engage students as they learn the mathematical processes associated with investigating, modelling, and solving problems. The program is developmentally appropriate. It connects with real concepts and children’s everyday life making it meaningful, consequently enhancing their confidence in Mathematics. Numerous opportunities of practice and reinforcement is provided for students to master skills. The problem- solving questions allow your child to develop the capacity to investigate and link mathematical ideas in various ways.
The Year 1 & 2 program have students participate and work towards expressing and interpreting mathematical ideas and exposes them to a variety of problem-solving activities.
Students explore, describe and explain aspects of the world around them in a mathematical way through using mathematical language. They understand fundamental concepts, demonstrate mathematical skills and apply routine mathematical procedures.
The Year 1 & 2 teachers understand what is expected from students at this stage. They work to move them beyond their own expectations to accomplish confidence and act with enthusiasm towards independently completing tasks. Our teachers guide children in seeing connections of ideas using a variety of teaching strategies including the use of hands-on materials. They encourage students to communicate to explain their thinking as they interact in a deep and sustained way with numbers.
Homework is distributed weekly ensuring students practice the skills learnt in class. It is collected and marked on a weekly basis then returned to the student. This enables teachers to assess their students’ level of understanding and focus on weaknesses.
Informal assessments are carried out during class where teachers observe students’ level of progress through class work and give written and verbal feedback.
Students are given two formal exams at the end of Term 1 and Term 3 and feedback is provided to parents/guardians. These results are used to determine areas of need and become a focal point for further learning.
Students are provided with a class workbook each term and revision booklets.
The Year 2 students are also provided with NAPLAN practice questions in Term 4 in preparation for Year 3 NAPLAN.
Student attendance, homework completion and understanding of content taught is recorded on a weekly basis for tracking purposes.
