Year 7, the foundations for success

At Chalkwall we believe that the most important grade is Years 7! Our reason is simple. Year 7 sets the foundation for success in High School English.

Students require experience with a wide range of texts that they will encounter at school, home and in society. At Chalkwall our students are given plenty of opportunities to understand and effectively use language in creative, interpretive and critical ways. This process aims to create effective communicators through responding and composing texts with clarity and coherence. Students draw on essential writing skills to develop and strengthen sentence structure, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary.

Weekly Classes: English

In the Year 7 Foundations for Success Program, students work to compose original pieces of writing to demonstrate an increasing awareness to purpose and audience. They learn to make decisions about their language choices to shape meaning and express diverse perspectives. Each term students actively experiment to create different styles of writing where the application of language features, precise word choice, sensory imagery and literary devices produce writing for specific purposes.

During class, students are taught strategies that they can use to independently plan, draft and edit their work in order to produce a polished piece of writing. Time is given for the teacher to conference with individual students so that they are given constructive feedback that can be used in the editing stage of writing before the final text is produced. When composing work, students learn to evaluate their own and others’ writing as a means to reflect on their learning.

Our English Educators help and support our students to become fearless writers. This is undertaken in a classroom environment where collaboration is built and nurtured to enhance the learning experience. Our instructors use a range of strategies to implement a well sequenced program that is responsive to the strengths and needs of students.

Homework

At the end Of every lesson students receive a homework booklet, exclusive to Chalkwall, which allows them to apply the skills learnt throughout the lesson to new texts and questions. This constant practice enhances a student’s understanding of the content taught and strengthens their ability to apply the skill in a school setting in the future.

Assessments

It is important to gauge a student’s progress as they advance through content and once they have completed a unit. For this reason. content quizzes are completed at random throughout the program with students also being assessed when a unit has been completed. These end Of unit assessments usually take place at the end Of the term under formal exam conditions. which allow students to mentally prepare for the exams they will be faced with at school.

Resources

At the start of each unit students are presented with a content booklet exclusive to Chalkwall English classes and developed by our experienced English staff This booklet acts as a tool that our educators use to introduce and explore new skills in their classes, allowing students to effectively apply what they have learnt to an array of different texts and questions.

Tracking

Student attendance, homework completion and understanding Of content taught is recorded on a weekly basis for tracking purposes.
