Kindergarten is a crucial year for students where they are challenged both socially and academically. Students are introduced to many new things and need to adapt to the rigorous schedule of school. All this can be daunting, not just for children but parents too!

At Chalkwall we understand that Kindergarten is a massive leap into unfamiliar territory. We aim to help students adjust to this change and support them to take on the beginning of their school life with a joyful confidence. Our program will have students eager to see just how much they can achieve. They learn through experiences with stories and word games while nurturing teachers work to foster development of curiosity and imagination.

Our program will have students eager to see just how much fun learning can be through scaffolded practical experiences where students learn to develop and understand their number sense and start developing fluency in Mathematics.

How the program works?

Weekly classes

English 

The Kindergarten Fundamentals program is designed to actively engage students in a fun way through shared experiences with friends while encouraging parent involvement along the way. To ensure students experience success in English, they are involved in three main areas of learning; sight word recognition, comprehension of texts and sentence writing.

Each week students are taught to identify, read and use sight words in sentence writing. Parents then work with their child at home to help reinforce this learning as regular practice of these words is key to reading and writing success at this stage. Students are given shared reading experiences and taught to comprehend texts on a literal level to gain meaning. The Kindergarten Fundamentals program has a teacher model the essential parts necessary to construct sentences with time given for students to experiment and practice so that they begin to independently write sentences in greater detail.

Maths 

The Kindergarten Essential Program is designed for students to develop number sense through multiple paths to actively engage all students and allow them to achieve success. Games, number cards/lines and weekly structured class notes enhance student experience as learning is sequential, interactive, engaging and essentially instructional.

The program specifically helps students learn to understand, develop fluency, and most importantly starts establishing reasoning skills while establishing their world of mathematical language. Students also learn to use the skill of problem-solving through using materials to model, sort and sequence; draw diagrams and estimate;  make a list and act it out; read, plan, write and check; look for patterns and discuss the sensibleness of the answer.

Each week students are taught to read, identify, model, discuss and write, while making explicit connections. Exposure to problem-solving strategies develops confidence in the student’s ability to reason. 

The clear structure of lessons and learning opportunities that foster success generates a sense of safety for all students to feel comfortable and competent so as to build positive attitudes towards Mathematics.

Parents work with their child at home to help reinforce this learning as regular practice is key to connecting and consolidating the essential knowledge required to understand how numbers work.

English 

Our qualified teachers work to assist your child learn the important skills necessary to read and write. They use strategies to teach students how to understand texts on a literal level so that meaning is made while reading. Our teachers also work with parents to help assist them with activities they can do at home to support students with the learning that takes place in the classroom.

Maths

Our qualified teachers assist your child to learn the important skills necessary to understand Number and Algebra. They use explicit directions, clear explanations, and enough practice, routine and repetition to help understanding of facts and make links. These teaching strategies are the building blocks for making sense of Mathematics and helps grow positive attitudes. Our teachers also work with parents to help assist them with activities they can do at home to support students with the learning that takes place in the classroom.

Students Receive

Homework

Homework is distributed weekly ensuring students practice the skills learnt in class. It is collected and marked on a weekly basis then returned to the student. This enables teachers to assess their students’ level of understanding and focus on weaknesses. 

Assessments

Informal assessments are carried out during class where teachers observe students’ level of progress through class work and give written and verbal feedback.

Students are given two formal exams at the end of Term 1 and Term 3 and feedback is provided to parents/guardians. These results are used to determine areas of need and become a focal point for further learning.

Resources

Students are provided with a class workbook each term, Fundamentals Literacy Kit, leveled reading books and revision booklets.

Tracking

Student attendance, homework completion and understanding of content taught is recorded on a weekly basis for tracking purposes.
