Why?

At Chalkwall we believe that the most important grades are Years 7! Our reason is simple. Years 7 set the foundation for the course of the entire HSC. How?

Based on their performance in these years, students starting Year 9 will sit the NAPLAN exam where a minimum Band 8 is the acceptable Band for a competent HSC performance. Ultimately a student’s attitude, performance and confidence will have a long lasting impact on the academic and working culture of a student going into Year 11 & 12.

This is why our English classes at Chalkwall are focused on strengthening students’ skills and delving into core topics that will inevitably have an effect on their performance in their HSC Years

How the Program Works?

Our Year 7 English program is designed to explore and enhance the key skills of reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and representing. Our teachers will introduce and nurture these skills not only so that students will excel in their HSC but also to develop them into critical thinkers who are ready to interact and contribute to the world.

Students Receive

Homework

At the end of every lesson students receive a homework booklet, exclusive to Chalkwall, which allows them to apply the skills learnt throughout the lesson to new texts and questions. This constant practice enhances a student’s understanding of the content taught and strengthens their ability to apply the skill in a school setting in the future.

Assessments

It is important to gauge a student’s progress as they advance through content and once they have completed a unit. For this reason, content quizzes are completed at random throughout the program with students also being assessed when a unit has been completed. These end of unit assessments usually take place at the end of the term under formal exam conditions, which allow students to mentally prepare for the exams they will be faced with at school.

Resources

At the start of each unit students are presented with a content booklet exclusive to Chalkwall English classes and developed by our experienced English staff. This booklet acts as a tool that our educators use to introduce and explore new skills in their classes, allowing students to effectively apply what they have learnt to an array of different texts and questions.

Year 7 students are provided with NAPLAN practice questions in Term 1 in preparation for NAPLAN.

Tracking

Student attendance, homework completion and understanding of content taught is recorded on a weekly basis for tracking purposes.
