Why?

Many students think that if they start focusing in Year 11 & 12, things will miraculously turn upwards and that a 99 ATAR will be a sure thing. What many students don’t know is that the English skills they gain from the start of High School are crucial to their performance in Year 11 & 12.

At Chalkwall, one of the aims of our Year 9 program is to pave the road to a working culture that is based on consistent effort, routine and balance. Our English classes at Chalkwall are focused on strengthening students’ core skills, especially those to be used in Year 11 & 12, such as essay writing.

Our Year 9 English program is designed to further explore and enhance the key skills of reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and representing. Our teachers will continue to help students grow in these skills not only so that they excel in their HSC but also to develop them into critical thinkers who are ready to interact and contribute to the world.

This is why we ensure that all our Educators have exceptional content knowledge, great delivery techniques and a positive attitude. In addition, our regular assessment of the performance of our teachers help us maintain our top quality educational programs.

Our English Educators

Our English Educators are sharp and very well versed in English content areas. Working together, our instructors have developed strategies on how to best teach students content as well as how to help keep them motivated and consistent.

Students Receive

Homework

At the end of every lesson students receive a homework booklet, exclusive to Chalkwall, which allows them to apply the skills learnt throughout the lesson to new texts and questions. This constant practice enhances a student’s understanding of the content taught and strengthens their ability to apply the skill in a school setting in the future.

Assessments

It is important to gauge a student’s progress as they advance through content and once they have completed a unit. For this reason, content quizzes are completed at random throughout the program with students also being assessed when a unit has been completed. These end of unit assessments usually take place at the end of the term under formal exam conditions, which allow students to mentally prepare for the exams they will be faced with at school.

Resources

At the start of each unit students are presented with a content booklet exclusive to Chalkwall English classes and developed by our experienced English staff. This booklet acts as a tool that our educators use to introduce and explore new skills in their classes, allowing students to effectively apply what they have learnt to an array of different texts and questions.

Year 9 students are also provided with NAPLAN practice questions in Term 1 in preparation for NAPLAN.

Tracking

Student attendance, homework completion and understanding of content taught is recorded on a weekly basis for tracking purposes.
